Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using such medications need to be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have come off the medication report a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural support.
